My thought on Indy 4...

It was ok. Enjoyable. Far from the best Indy, sadly, probably the weakest of all 4. I went in with low expectations, so i wasn't disappointed. I am glad I went in like that because I liked it, just didn't love it.

I really think the lack of emotion in the film was the problem. Specifically the "meh" reunion of Marion and Indy. It just seemed to be placed there. I wanted something more from that. I think with all of the talent in this film and behind the camera, it could have been better.

One thing is for sure, you cannot lay sole blame on George Lucas for this. Spielberg directed it, Ford acted in it, the plot wasn't bad, it wasn't too far fetched to be an Indy movie. I just feel like while I did enjoy it, I was detached from it.

Good points for me:

The "Young Indy" reference

Indy showing his age

The Area 51 stuff, I liked the whole sequence, that was a good opening to the film. It made me excited at first.

The cameo by the Ark, great stuff.

I liked the Nuke testing part. I know it bugged folks, but I dug it! I liked how he escaped.

Mutt, Henry Jones III, I like Shia, I'm a fan of the kid... but I liked his character. I just wanted more out of him.

The fight in the Malt shop, the cycle chase.

The Jungle Chase.

The giant ants

The Crystal Skull plot.

What bothered me:

Lack of urgency and emotion

Poor use of Marion

Ray Winstone's character

I wanted Jim Broadbent used better, Brody-esque if you will. He too was leaving his position because of how Indy was treated... why not have joined Indy on whatever was happening... Brody would have!

John Hurt's character could have been used better and honestly, he wasn't truly needed... could have better used having died during the end sequence

Cate Blanchett was ok in it... not great, just ok.

The Russians could have been better villians in this, seriously.

The underwhelming Climax. That could have been handled better. Reaction and effects wise. I don't mind the use of Aliens in an Indy movie considering that the theory aliens helped build a lot of the civilizations that Indy digs up... I just think that while I liked the plot, it wasn't executed well.

I think I got it all in. I do think at times it was TOTALLY an Indy film and the rest of it it was just another movie with Indy in it.

I will say, I'm hoping for another film... if for any reason other then this CANNOT be the last Indy film.

I would like another one as well for the same reason, unless the rumor about your new soulmate Sheena taking over the reins to the movie are true. I think looking back on it the individual scenes were okay to decent just the movie as a whole was disjointed. Plus the waterfall was like something out of Land of the Lost with the cut aways.

There almost has to be a sequel cause we still don't know how he lost an eye

On the whole, I liked it more than I expected it to. And on reflection - I think I like it more than the Temple of Doom.

I could've done without the Marion bits.

I was on board pretty much up until the reveal. A lot of the action sequences were goofy, but not terribly so, and they were fun enough to keep me involved. The end was just so astonishingly anti-climatic, and the wedding just capped what I think you've pegged, the lack of emotion invested in the characters.
